I paint simple things — the fruit on the counter, the leaf on the windowsill — and let the color do the rest. Unlikely Best Friends is a deep violet eggplant, a sun-yellow lemon, and a single curling leaf, sitting together because they happen to be in the kitchen and because they look beautiful next to each other.
